1987 C.T. Msimang in S. Afr. Jrnl of Afr. Langs Vol.7 No.3, 82The earliest form of Tsotsitaal, namely Shalambombo, was..strictly a secret language. Unlike Tsotsitaal, the term Shalambombo is easy to explain. This is a compound word formed from two Zulu ideophones, shala (i.e. of shunning) and mbo-mbo (i.e. of covering over or turning upside-down).
