A slogan coined by James Mpanza when he founded an illegal but successful squatter settlement near Orlando station, Johannesburg, in March, 1944; also attributive, designating the settlement and associations or activities connected with it. b. Sampson Treason Cage 72In April 1944,..a crowd of thousands..living in the tents and hessian shelters of Orlando location..made a well-disciplined trek to a nearby plot of empty municipal land, and squatted there...They were led by..James Mpanza, who adopted the slogan ‘Sofasonke’ — ‘we all die together’ — for his bold operation...The municipality accepted the new shanty town.
