- The term Braai Day originated in 2005 from the Braai4Heritage campaign initiated by Jan Scannell, otherwise known as Jan Braai, with the stated aim of encouraging national unity across cultural lines. The idea was supported by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu who, in 2007, was made the national spokesperson for Braai Day. Initially criticized by the National Heritage Council of South Africa for seeming to trivialize Heritage Day, the initiative subsequently received the Council’s endorsement.
