Heritage Day, noun phrase
The 24th of September, celebrated as a public holiday since 1995. Also attributive. See also Braai Day, Shaka Day.
- Note:
- The term Heritage Day originated from Shaka Day, a public holiday celebrated in the former self-governing homeland of KwaZulu, honouring the Zulu king, Shaka. When Shaka Day was omitted from the proposed Public Holidays Bill in 1994, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), which has a predominantly Zulu membership, objected. In response, the South African government designated the 24th of September as Heritage Day, declaring it a national holiday to celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of all South Africans.
1994 E. Prov. Herald 8 Sept. 1Heritage Day, in which the various sectors of society could celebrate their
cultures, would fall on September 24, which was also Shaka Day.
